Money.
“For which one of you, when he wants to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost, to see if he has enough to complete it?” Luke 14:28
You counted the cost when you began your ministry. It cost much less then!
Time has past and life is adding new costs that weren’t there before. Expenses like cars, education, children, a home, medical expenses, college, and let’s not even mention retirement. Financial needs—both current and coming soon—are piling up all too quickly.
The sad reality is many mission workers are financially unsustainable. Which is a major source of stress, team and marriage strife, and ministry departure.
Achieving personal financial sustainability may feel like a dream, but it’s possible! Even if you’re on a limited budget.
Financial sustainability is the ability to live comfortably and have enough reserves to cover unexpected expenses and future needs without borrowing money, while giving most of your time and attention to ministry.
Your lifestyle is comfortable, allowing you the mental headspace to focus on ministry.
You feel secure financially and are not living paycheck to paycheck.
You’re ready for a $2,500 unexpected expense without going into debt.
You’re building toward larger financial goals, like a home, your next car, the kids’ education, and retirement.
You have financial margin for currency exchange rate fluctuations.
Your time, energy, and emotions prioritize your ministry rather than your finances.
Money Matters is a training course specifically designed for mission workers to give you money mindsets and financial tools to create financial sustainability so that you can fully live out your calling without money getting in the way.
Imagine being able to continue living out your calling—doing your ministry—without the stress, burnout, or relational strife caused by financial instability.
You take care of your spiritual health, your physical health, and your relational health. How about your financial health?
This is not a get-out-of-debt course. It’s not a get-rich-quick course. It’s not a fundraising course. Money Matters teaches fundamental financial sustainability principles, tools, and applications.
Clear, understandable principles for those starting out or expanding in your financial literacy.
How to care for your financial health.
How to reduce stress, burnout, and relational strife due to finances.
How to strategically invest for your future, regardless of how much money you have.
Proven methods of avoiding debt.
How to build long-term financial sustainability so that you can fully life out your calling without money getting in the way.
For 20 years, I lived and ministered in Japan, Indonesia, and Singapore. Like many mission workers, we trimmed our expenses to avoid having to raise more money. Eventually, that lack of financial stewardship caught up to us, limiting our ministry options. We made changes. Stepping out in faith, we developed new financial habits.
From my experience supervising and coaching missionaries, personal financial management is often not discussed and overlooked.
But I talk about it! Because I want mission workers to experience freedom in living out God's calling. This requires financial sustainability.

"Finances has always seemed like a huge and intimidating topic—one we never felt prepared to handle. Being able to talk about our finances in an open and safe space during the group calls was so encouraging. For the first time we feel like we have a road map with practical, simple steps for our financial goals."

"The course helped bring together all my thoughts and concerns into a safe space, debunk unhelpful narratives and encouraged me to be intentional at working on my finances at my own pace whilst also receiving helpful guidance. Keith was realistic whilst also positive about the journey you can expect as you begin to work on your finances."
MacGregor Magruder
President, Field Life
"We have known many who have left the field due to financial struggles and stress. In Money Matters, Keith invites you on a very personal, passionate, and, most importantly, practical journey through the key areas every missionary should consider regarding their finances and His finances. This course is something I wish we had as part of our pre-field preparation."

There are many financial education resources out there for the general public. This course specifically seeks to help mission workers who have a unique set of circumstances, such as raising personal support, serving in ministry organizations, with often little exposure to healthy financial discussions.
We encourage married couples to both join. One of you register, then email us your name and your spouse’s name and email. We’ll set them up with their own account for the course. For group calls, we suggest connecting from different devices so that you each can go into a different breakout room for discussions.
Those with high consumer debt need specialized assistance to diagnose the reasons for the debt, create strategies to change those behaviors, and develop a process to eliminate that debt. These needs are beyond the scope of this course.
It’s written by an American, based on the American financial system. However, the principles will extend to those from other countries, although the specifics may vary because of differing systems.
A small fee for the training creates financial sustainability for Money Matters, which means as more people join, we can afford the additional costs of running it.
